Backpack Self development Series

The Bright Backpack Self Development Series is a 8 week program aimed at supporting healthy emotional development, resilience and self-identity in the lives of primary-aged children, and can also be tailored to 3-5 pre-schoolers.

It has been developed in accordance with the Primary PDHPE and Creative Arts syllabus and My Time, Our Place Framework for optimal learning outcomes. Follow the stories of Yazzie, Ollie and their friends, provoking thoughts and feelings around topics such as identity and self esteem, boundaries, healthy emotions, healthy communication and social skills, integrity, and inclusion, with an anti-bullying message throughout.

Through creative team-building activities, music, role plays, storytelling using the backpacks and worksheets, children will gain insight and a deeper understanding of related issues and practical coping strategies equipping them with resilience skills not only for their school or home environment but beyond.

Over the term, children will gain insight into their own values, ultimately leading to a better understanding of self-worth and identity.

We will be exploring relationships and how we communicate and connect with others on a deeper, genuine level, without the masks and pretences.  Learning this at a young age means children will be more likely to establish and maintain strong healthy relationships as adults. In this particular subject, we are also looking at social media and the effects of online bullying.

How to create and keep personal, physical and emotional boundaries. This will enable children to communicate their needs with others so they are better able to establish, develop and maintain healthy, respectful relationships.

Integrity & Character

What does it mean to have integrity and be a person of strong character, and humility?

Walk through with the puppets as they learn how to make good choices, and what happens when they don’t.

Self-regulation is a pivotal foundation for developing emotional maturity. Children will be given tools to use as building blocks so they are better able to adapt and prevail in a world where they will be challenged in their emotional connection to others.

A focus on strengths allows children to explore and discover their strengths, celebrate their differences, owning their weaknesses and mistakes, and builds on the characteristics that make them unique.

Tying all the weeks together The Rainbow Backpack self-development program shows children the freedom that can come from being themselves. We also see the bully for who she really is, also another backpack struggling with their identity and self worth. Children will see themselves through the lives of the backpacks, and experience freedom by the end.

Meet Yazzie (Yellow), Ollie (Orange) Bobbie (Blue), Gerbert (Green) Raven (Red), Pearl (Pink) and Porsha (Purple).

Since 2019, they have been travelling to schools, chatting with kids all around Australia, and never empty-handed, I mean never empty-backpacked.

They bring stories, games and activities packed with learning through fun to stimulate and shape growing minds in hope that they will aspire children to become the best version of themselves.

During the duration of the program, children will explore their own values, relationships, and strengths, ultimately adopting positive perceptions of themselves and the people and culture around them.

One story I personally love is one child that we taught the boundaries lesson to, who came back the following week having implemented one of the things we taught her. The smile and freedom on her face was priceless. She had told one of her peers that she wasn’t comfortable with something that she was doing, and that child responded respectfully, enhancing their friendship.

There are countless stories just like this one, and there will be many more to come. We are passionate about teaching this generation lessons that we weren’t taught because our parents generation just didn’t know. But what a privilege it is!
